Birqa:
a traditional mask worn by women in the desert to keep sand out of their
mouths. Made of cloth, fabric, and string, and often coloured/painted purple,
black, yellow, or gold, it is a practical traditional garment that retains
little heat and holds no original Islamic purpose though it does blur a woman's
facial features, and it still worn by older women and the Beduoin in Khaleeji
and African (namely Egypt) countries. ***a term often mistaken for the mesh
chador of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
